Adding Serial Ports in Windows 95
When trying to install more serial ports in Windows 95, you may find that you cannot get Windows to recognize your newly installed ports. You will find that the new ports that you have just added do not have a COM port number such as COM5 or COM6. The following instructions will help correct this problem.
- After you installed the port by using the ADD NEW HARDWARE folder manually reboot the system and go back to the SYSTEM FOLDER and click on the DEVICE MANAGER page. In the PORTS AND LPT section, select the new port you just added which identifies itself only as COMMUNICATIONS PORT. You should also note that there is a little yellow check mar just to the left.
- Highlight the COMMUNICATIONS PORT and click on PROPERTIES. You will notice that down on the bottom of the page, there are two little square boxes as follows:
- ORIGINAL CONFIGURATIONS CURRENT (Appears only on Windows 95 version A)
- DISABLE IN THIS HARDWARE PROFILE
- REMOVE FROM THIS HARDWARE PROFILE
- Place a CHECK MARK on the Top Box where it says DISABLE IN THIS HARDWARE PROFILE, close and reboot the system.
- then the system is rebooted, open the SYSTEM FOLDER again and go to the DEVICE MANAGER. To the left of the new COM port you just added, you will now see a big red cross replacing the little yellow check mark. Don't be alarmed, highlight the new COM Port again and click on PROPERTIES. Go back to the little square box that has a check mark.
- Now remove the CHECK MARK you put there before and the new port is now in sequence with your other ports; that is, it now has a new number such as COM5 or COM6 following the last numbered port in your system.
