# Deconsolidation

Deconsolidation is the act of separating out LCL shipments to prepare them for final delivery.

## What is deconsolidation?

Deconsolidation is the act of separating out [LCL](https://www.flexport.com/glossary/less-than-container-load/) shipments to prepare them for final delivery.

LCL shipments are [consolidated](https://www.flexport.com/glossary/consolidation/) into a container at origin, and deconsolidated at destination. Consolidation and deconsolidation is done at a [CFS.](https://www.flexport.com/glossary/container-freight-station/)

## What happens during deconsolidation?

When an LCL container reaches its destination, a warehouse or container freight station unloads it and separates the cargo by consignee. Staff check each shipment against the bill of lading, note any damage or shortages, and stage the goods for pickup or delivery. Customs usually clears each consignee's cargo separately, so the cargo stays at the station until that clearance finishes.

Deconsolidation takes time and adds handling fees on top of the ocean freight. Plan for a few extra days compared with a full container load, which a consignee can pick up as a single unit.
