Flexport has partnered with the Carbonfund.org Foundation to offer our clients a carbon footprint offset program. Through the program, clients have the opportunity to offset their transportation footprint by donating carbon credits directly through Flexport.

All Flexport LCL shipments are already offset, at no additional cost to you. If you choose to opt into this program for all your freight moves, your Flexport team will add a donation line item to every invoice (just $7 per carbon tonne). 100% of these donations will be passed through to Carbonfund.org, where they will be allocated to third-party verified sustainability initiatives such as:

  • Avoiding deforestation in the Amazonian Basin, Brazil
  • Generating international wind energy
  • Converting landfill gas to renewable energy in the U.S.
  • Electrifying truck stops in the U.S.

Every quarter, the Flexport. org team will share updates, offset data, and photographs from the projects you’re contributing to, which you may then include in your company’s own sustainability reports and messaging.

Participants will receive a certificate with one of two designations: Carbon-Offset Shipper and Carbon_free_Ⓡ Shipper.

How many tonnes of CO₂ emissions are my shipments currently producing?

You can use Flexport’s carbon calculator to understand your CO₂ emissions. This data is available for each shipment when you receive the quote, throughout the entire shipment process, and in free reporting/analytics tools.

Here’s an example of a typical China-to-USWC (US West Coast) shipment, to help put the numbers into perspective:

Why should I consider participating in the carbon offset program?

CO₂ is the world's most prevalent greenhouse gas, which contributes to disruptive weather and devastating natural disasters. Transportation is the second largest source of CO₂ emissions globally, and freight-related transportation can account for 30 to over 50% of a company's total carbon footprint.

This substantial amount has pushed regulators to curb emissions through policy worldwide. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a program of the UN, is developing a regulatory program that would mitigate GHG emissions from air travel. Additionally, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is beginning to work on a comparable program for ocean freight.

Voluntary carbon offsetting with Flexport can make your long-term carbon reduction goals achievable overnight at relatively low costs. And to make your decision even easier, since Carbonfund.org is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, all offset donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. On average, offsetting your footprint from shipping adds just 1% to your total freight spend.

How do I know my offsets make a difference?

The Carbonfund.org Foundation is a leading 501(c)(3) nonprofit climate solutions provider, who has helped over 2,000 organizations with their carbon neutral initiatives. Carbonfund.org’s projects are third-party certified, validated, and audited. Their projects also meet the standard of additionality, which requires that carbon emission reductions are directly tied to the project - in other words, that they were not already funded by, or part of, an existing project or mandate.
