Bobtail Fee

What is a bobtail fee?

A bobtail fee is charged by the trucker to drop off an FCL container at the warehouse and pick it up after it has been unloaded, as opposed to a live unload. A bobtail fee is also called a drop fee.

A bobtail is a truck (tractor) that’s traveling without a trailer.

If applicable, a bobtail fee will appear on your Flexport invoice as a Destination Charge.

When does a bobtail fee apply?

The fee applies when the trucker delivers the loaded container to your warehouse, detaches it, and leaves. The trucker returns later to collect the empty container. This drop arrangement frees the truck and driver for other jobs, so truckers often charge for the extra trip.

How does it compare to a live unload?

In a live unload, the driver waits while your team empties the container, and waiting time can trigger extra charges depending on the trucker. A drop avoids driver wait time but adds the bobtail fee. Weigh the two options against how quickly your dock can unload.
