What is customs clearance?

Customs clearance is the process of preparing and submitting the necessary documentation required to facilitate the import or export of goods across international borders. This procedure ensures that shipments comply with the legal and regulatory requirements of the destination country, including payment of duties, taxes, and customs fees. Successful customs clearance allows goods to enter or leave a country smoothly, minimizing delays in international shipping and trade.

What are the steps in customs clearance?

The process usually starts with the commercial invoice, packing list, and transport document. The importer or its broker then files an entry or declaration, the customs authority reviews it, and you pay the duties and taxes due. The authority may then release the goods, ask for more documents, or select them for inspection.

Exports clear in the origin country, and imports clear in the destination country. Timing depends on the country, the port, and the accuracy of your paperwork. Missing documents and classification errors commonly cause delays and storage charges.
