Export Declaration

What is an export declaration?

An export declaration provides information about the goods being shipped to Customs. This information is used to regulate exports and to compile statistical information on foreign trade.

Who files an export declaration?

The exporter or its freight forwarder files the declaration with customs in the exporting country, usually electronically and before the goods leave. The declaration lists the goods, their value, their tariff classification, the destination country, and the parties involved. In the United States, exporters file through the Automated Export System (AES).

Authorities use the declaration to check that the goods can legally leave, to enforce export controls and licenses, and to compile trade statistics. A missing or inaccurate filing can hold up a shipment at the port and lead to fines.
