NVWA | De Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit
What is the NVWA?
The Dutch NVWA (Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit), or Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, is the Dutch government agency responsible for the safety of food and consumer products, animal welfare and nature. The NVWA can inspect certain goods imported into the Netherlands to check that they comply with safety regulations.
How does the NVWA affect your imports?
If you import food, plants, animal products or certain consumer goods into the Netherlands, the NVWA may inspect your shipment at the port of entry, often alongside Dutch Customs. Inspections can include document checks, physical checks and sampling. Goods that don't meet requirements can be held, returned or destroyed, and the importer usually covers the related costs.
How do you prepare for an NVWA inspection?
Confirm which permits, certificates and health documents apply to your product before it ships. For many products arriving from outside the European Union (EU), you'll also need to submit a Common Health Entry Document (CHED) in advance. Your customs broker can tell you which controls apply.
