NES | The National Export System

What is NES?

The National Export System (NES) is a computer-based system which enables export declarations to be submitted electronically. The use of the National Export System (NES) is mandatory for businesses. NES operates within CHIEF.

Who used NES?

UK exporters and freight forwarders used NES to send export declarations to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) electronically. The declaration describes the goods, their value, and where they're going, and HMRC uses it to decide whether to release the goods for export.

HMRC has since moved export declarations to the Customs Declaration Service (CDS), which replaced CHIEF and NES.
