Multichannel Fulfillment
What is multichannel fulfillment?
Multichannel fulfillment is a retail distribution strategy where a business sells products through several different sales channels, such as an online store, Amazon, and physical retail, but manages the inventory and fulfillment operations for each channel independently. In this "siloed" model, stock is often physically or digitally partitioned for specific platforms (e.g., "Amazon stock" vs. "Web store stock").
How does multichannel fulfillment work?
A brand might hold one stock pool for its web store, another for Amazon and a third for a retail partner. Each channel has its own inventory count, and the team reconciles them separately. Orders ship only from the pool assigned to that channel.
What are the trade-offs?
Multichannel is often the simplest way to start selling on a new marketplace. The downside is stranded inventory: one channel can sell out while another holds excess stock. It also tends to mean more manual work to rebalance units, and counts that drift can lead to overselling. Growing brands often move toward omnichannel fulfillment to fix this.
